Neuro Clinics Australia FAQs

How long does it take for TMS to start working?

Everyone’s experience with TMS is different. Experiences vary based on several factors, including personal brain chemistry and treatment regimes. Some patients start to feel the benefits of TMS treatment within two to four treatments.

In contrast, others don’t notice the effects for several weeks. Younger people may experience the benefits of TMS faster than older people because their brains adapt faster to changes.

How long does TMS treatment last?

Treatment sessions vary in length depending on the TMS coil used and the number of pulses delivered, but typically, each session lasts around 20 minutes. Patients receive bespoke therapy designed for their individual needs; this can vary depending on an individual’s response to treatment.

Also, because TMS is a non-invasive treatment, you do not need to arrange for someone to drive you home after treatment.

Is TMS safe?

TMS is non- invasive, does not require anaesthesia, and can be performed on an outpatient basis. TMS is a form of neural stimulation that does not require surgery or implantation of electrodes. It uses a magnetic pulse to stimulate neural networks, improving executive function, decision making and anxiety, amongst other psychological conditions.

TMS Therapy is focused on the areas of the brain that control mood, so it does not negatively affect thinking and memory functions, or any other normal brain functions. TMS is considered safe and well-tolerated, it is 100% free of medication side effects. Unlike traditional antidepressant medications, TMS Therapy does not cause weight gain, sexual dysfunction, nausea, fatigue or negative cognitive effects.

Clients’ safety is our highest priority here at Neuro Clinics Australia, and we take every necessary precaution to minimise any potential discomfort or associated risks during treatment.

Does Medicare cover TMS therapy?

TMS will be covered by Medicare as of Nov 2021, when prescribed and administered by licensed physicians like those here at Neuro Clinics Australia that accepts Medicare and is knowledgeable in the use of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

Neuro Clinics Australia only apply protocols which have shown the latest clinical efficacy. By combining TMS with Psychotherapy (CBT), studies show this is effective in 66% of the population who suffer executive function issues. After a course of TMS Therapy, most patients enjoy long-lasting benefits.

What are the TMS treatment costs?

TMS isn’t invasive, does not require anaesthesia, and can be performed on an outpatient basis and typically, the cost can be between $3,500 to $5,000. This is based on ten 20min TMS treatments, and ten Cognitive Behavioural Therapy sessions per week. However, this may change because everyone’s experience with TMS is different.
